A village teenager has proposed making a few recreational improvements to the village playground and new water splash pad area on the American Legion property.

Eddy Berthiaume, of Stillwater Boy Scout Troop #4035, presented plans to the Board of Trustees Oct. 15 for adding two wooden benches and an informational message board at the playground as his final project needed to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout. The benches, which would be a similar design to the ones located at Stillwater Blockhouse Park, could be used by parents supervising their children at the splash pad.

“It was an idea I came up with but I’m open to other ideas,” Berthiaume said. “It’s just a proposal at this time.”

The project would have to be approved by the Boys Scout Council and completed before his 18th birthday on April 1 to qualify for his Eagle Scout designation. The Village Board approved the concept and will wait to hear more from the Scout as plans moves forward.

In other business Oct. 15

• Mayor Judith Wood-Shaw reported that the village waste water treatment plant was given a satisfactory rating following a Sept. 25 inspection by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
• Trustees voted to void water rebate checks issued to five village property owners back in January, 2015. The checks were never cashed. The village has made a good faith effort to contact the check owners or their next of kin without success. Village Clerk/Treasurer Sheristin Tedesco told the Village Board she believes the five are now deceased. Each voided check totals $220 with $1,100 being returned to the village’s general water fund. The rebate checks were issued to all village water customers following the settlement of a lawsuit with General Electric Co. and the abolishment of the former EDU water rents in 2015.
• Mayor Wood-Shaw announced she would like the village to conduct a review of the local law regulating mobile home parks.
• The village will attempt to invite New York State Senator Daphne Jordan, 43rd District, on a tour of the waste water treatment plant to discuss the need for state funding for various renovations or repairs.
