Large battery installation underway in the village

Construction of a large Lithium storage battery is in progress at 982 Hudson Ave. The owner of this project is Stillwater Energy Storage, LLC, a subsidiary of RWE Renewables Americas.

This installation is being installed under contract to New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG), and its purpose is to reduce the peak electric load of the transformer supplying the Village of Stillwater and part of the Town of Stillwater.

During the hottest part of the summer the battery can be called upon to offset part of the electric load normally provided by the transformer. In so doing NYSEG is able to keep the existing transformer in operation and avoid the large capital cost of a replacement.

The use of a battery for this purpose is a unique application which was created by law by the New York State Legislature and implemented through the Public Service Commission. Approval for this installation by the Village was four years ago, and the approval was updated in September 2022.
