Stillwater Blockhouse opens for 16th season with memorial service

The 13th Albany County Militia presented a memorial service ending with a traditional Blessing of the Flags on May 23 to kick off the Stillwater Blockhouse’s 16th season. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Village Historian Linda Sanders. The invocation and flag blessings was by Rev. Pamela Woodman. Phil Colarusso of the militia gave a history of the Blessing of the Flags, and Josh Canary read a poem. John Mehan read a story about the POW-MIA flag. Poppy Queen Julia Bouleris encouraged people to wear a poppy. There was a musket salute, memorial prayer and taps played by Steve Desadore. There was a Blue Star Mothers salute and Blue Star Pins were presented by Ed Behrmaster, Rick Nelson and clergy. The ceremony end with the retiring of the colors. The Blockhouse is open noon to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is free and tours are welcome.
